Healing Through Understanding: Navigating Grief & Trauma Together.
Grief and trauma often intersect in the lives of military and veteran families, yet they are distinct experiences with unique paths to healing. This EmpowerEd session will explore evolving understandings of grief—from early stage-based models to contemporary, culturally informed perspectives. Dr. Chantel Dooley will examine how trauma complicates grief, particularly after sudden or violent loss, and how military culture, identity, and belonging shape the grieving experience. Participants will gain practical tools, conversation strategies, and accessible resources to support those navigating grief or trauma after the death of a military or veteran loved one. This session will also create space for reflection, connection, and shared learning.
Learning Objectives
Identify key features of traumatic grief specific to military and veteran survivors.
Understand how military culture, identity, and trauma influence the grieving process.
Explore trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches that promote healing and resilience.
